Deadline Week - Friday 21st 6pm Youtube Rough Cut

Notice - Kieran & Connie & Katie - leave your camera gear with Ian in the music office. They are being sent away Weds AM to be serviced so I need them in school today & tomorrow

Lesson Objective

Continue to edit to develop and build you rough cut for Friday - below is feedback & improvements from your what you sent to me on Friday

Katie - Some good shots, you really need to focus on getting performance uploaded & multiclipped. See the post on the blog for instructions. Cut down the Playground footage - the narrative isn't clear and goes on too long. Beat edit it doesn't match the tempo of the song. Difficult to grade without seeing synching. Grade ?

Iesha & Alex - you urgently need to get those extra shots as there is a lack of variety in the footage. The bar fight Tom is smiling so cut this more carefully - if necessary re-shoot closeup of his face hiding the background. Teetering on a Grade C2 currently try and get this up to a B with the pick up shots. Borrow camera from Katie or Connie to do this today - the cameras are getting sent away on Wednesday and I need to package them Weds AM.

Connie & Kieran - Hope the shoot went well, I didn't receive the cut on Friday so I have nothing really to add. Obviously get it uploaded and multiclipped - see the instructional video posted and other students to help you. You must give your camera and kit to Ian in the music office they are being sent away on Wednesday morning to be serviced. Grade ?

Max - I waited on Friday to book you a camera but I haven't heard anything. They are being sent away Wednesday but i can let you have a Palmcorder over the xmas break. Grade ?

Chloe & Nicole - You didn't send me you cut on Friday so I cannot comment on how to improve. Grade ?

Joe & Maisy - Narrative bit unclear - you need those crowd shots and the shot where they are breaking into the building. Why do the band have masks on that early in the song? Shouldn't this develop for the big reveal at the end chorus/verse - i suspect you didn't get enough angles without masks on and are relying on these as coverage but if this is not the case then organise this to the structure of the track. The performance needs to be a lot quicker in terms of shots - they are on screen too long at times and not cut to make your singer look as confident as he needs to. Also - make sure you colour grade and darken the shot. Grade B2

Beckie & Beth - Overall pretty good, narrative a little jumpy and disjointed so try and tidy it up so it flows now by cutting it in with the performance footage when that is finished. Why is he kicking the wall? Once you've cut together colour grade and sort the contrast. Grade B3

Magg & Adam - drags a bit during the argument at 20ish seconds so needs to cut away to something else - also what happened to the great bit where Kieran walks out from the front of the house slams door them lip synchs??? Keep that in it was magic. Looking pretty good but you need to get a move on and multiclip the performance asap and then colour correction/effects. Without seeing the performance footage & cut difficult to give you a prediction of grade so Grade ?

Abbie & George - well cut, nice shots but no narrative? Gets a bit samey and predictable after a while so based just on this its a B3. Make sure you colour correct it/motion blur lights.

Week 5 - 3 weeks remain (& Multiclip Guide)

Attention A2 Media Students Advanced Skills Check that you know what to do on your shoot

Here are the 3 most crucial things you must be doing on your shoots - from looking at some of the footage groups have returned there seems to be a lack of skills preparation despite covering this on the blog with instructional videos

You edited this video so you could see how you should be filming yours - look carefully at the framing, the angles (they got down on the floor!) where the lights are positioned, the use of focus, how the light creates shadows, the composition of the shots down the guitar/bass neck - ask yourself...

DOES YOUR LOOK THIS PROFESSIONAL? What's the difference? This is what is expected for an A grade - that is why it was given to you as an example to work with

Advanced Production = Advanced Skills = Advanced Cinematography
  1. Using Pictoral Lighting (Backlighting, Kicking out from the background)
  2. Composition (Rule of 3rds) & creating Depth & Interesting Perspectives (ie from shots up the guitar neck)
  3. Using Depth of Field = Shallow Focus & Focus pulls
  4. Movement, Steadicam, Arcs, Tracks, pans, tilts
  5. Coverage from 8-10 angles ALL THE WAY THOUGH THE TRACK with LOTS OF CLOSE UP 'SINGLES'

Without the above you will not get the A you need to carry you through the A Level exam.

So before any more kit is booked all groups must see me for a 30 minute tutorial to discuss and for you to prove you can do the above - do not expect to collect kit on the day without going through this...it has become necessary to take these steps.

Why Use Depth of Field? Here are some of the reasons I love using a shallow depth of field: It directs the viewer’s attention. When we strategically place things out of focus, the viewer doesn’t pay attention to them. Viewers focus on the part of the image that’s in focus. It reduces distraction in the background. Distracting backgrounds can be a huge problem. And unfortunately, they tend to be a normal part of video. You can control depth of field and make distracting backgrounds bearable. It makes the image look more cinematic. If you’re going to be shooting video anyway, you might as well make it look cinematic. :) You can add visual interest. In the birthday cake example above, I described a technique called a “rack focus” which is simply shifting the focus from something in the background to something in the foreground, or the opposite direction. This a technique you can do in video, that you can’t do in a single still photograph. You can probably think of more reasons, but these are the big ones I could immediately generate. So now you know why to use depth of field. Now the question is…how? A Shallow Depth of Field: How to Create It Would you be surprised to find out that your current video camera can most likely create a shallow depth of field? There are a few exceptions, such as the small pocket cameras like the Flip Video camera, Kodak Zi8, or the iPhone. However, with a traditional video camera, here’s how you create a beautiful shallow depth of field: Move far away from your subject (because you’re going to zoom in a lot.) Zoom in a lot (maybe all the way). Open the aperture on your camera all the way. This might be called the f-stop or Iris on your camera, but open it all the way up. It could be that your video camera has a mode called “portrait”. If so, choose that mode.

Homework post pitch due w/c 9th October

1. Complete all tasks up to L4 - use creative ways to present your research
Continue with your ideas develpoment for your pitches, take a photo of the feedback you were given on paper and comment on what you were advised to consider:

Most groups need to structure theor ideas for a narrative more carefully

You must use the elements of a narrative:

A chain of events (plot) cause-effect

Character types: hero, princess, helper, wise man etc

Story types: The Chase, The pact with the devil, The loss of something, The fall of the powerful

Binary Opposition: Hero/Villain, Man/Woman, Protagonist/Antagonist

Structure: What are the stages of the journey/story - act 1, act 2, act 3
How are these structured around the songs verses/choruses

Genre:
Romantic - boy meets girl, boy looses girl, boy gets girl back again
Western: stranger comes to town with a past - establish her's deadly/powerful, seeking justice/old life draws him in, threats to something he cares about, one on gang gets beaten, heals and grows for the lesson, shootout at noon kills enemy, rides off into the sunset

Remember: Shots make sequences, sequences make scenes, scenes make plot, plot makes story

The result of constructing an Image for an artist

LINK

So what Image has the label constructed for them?

Criminality?
Anarchic?
Libertines?
Outlaws - this one has particular romantic and attractive connotations which could sell.

Also notice the uniforms and mugshot cards 'LAPD' = Los Angeles Police Department (in California, USA)

Which market are they selling to - British or American? Do they have a British or US Rock sound?

Are these selling to Men to identify with...or teen rock girls to fawn over as Bad Boys!

Examiners feedback & assessment - READ THIS HOW TO IMPROVE

Some suggestion for how to present creatively

http://my.brainshark.com
A presentation using stills & video with your directors commentary (good for music video analysis/website analysis

Prezi
A zooming presentation, good for target audience analysis/evidence - add a audio commentary and vox pops

GoAnimate!
Create animations using stock characters (good for evaluation?)

http://www.xtranormal.com/
Online movie maker - uses shot types angles etc, could be useful for putting across your ideas for Marketing Strategy or discussion of how it will be Intertextual/Voyeuristic etc

Online Collage maker

TubePopper
Online video annotation tool - a must for your music video analysis!
